Important Points to
Ponder
By coming to Suriname and serving as a
volunteer, you need to recognize that you are entering a
battlefield! There is certainly no need to fear this battle; in
fact, it's one you engage in as a Christian every day whether you
realize it or not. The battle may, however, be more intense in
Suriname as you purposefully oppose Satan in spreading the good news
of Jesus Christ. There are many good Christian books on the subject
of spiritual warfare that you may want to read before coming to
Suriname.
As a possible help, we've put together
these "points to ponder" as you prepare spiritually for your trip to
Suriname.
-
Remember that the war's already won.
"In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have
overcome the world." (John 16:33b)
"For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor
demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither
height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to
separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus." (Romans
8:38-39)
"Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting? But
thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus
Christ." (I Cor. 15:55,57)
"You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because
the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world."
(I John 4:4)
-
Recognize the power you have in
Christ.
"Call unto me, and I will answer you, and show you great and
mighty things, which you know not of." (Jer. 33:3)
"If two of you shall agree on earth as touching anything that they
shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in
heaven. For where two or three are gathered together in my name,
there am I in the midst." (Mt. 18:19-20)
"Truly I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, be taken up and
cast into the sea, and does not doubt in his heart, but believes
that what he says will come to pass, it will be done for him.
Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you
have received it, and it will be yours." (Mt. 11:23-24)
"You have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you,
that you should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should
remain: that whatsoever you shall ask of the Father in my name, he
may give it to you." (Jn. 15:16)
-
Walk the walk; don't just talk the
talk!
Don't expect that by coming to a foreign country on a mission
trip you are going to immediately turn into "Super Christian!" Your
time here in Suriname should be an extension of your ministry in the
States. If you are living a life that you know is not pleasing to
God, get right NOW! And as we all daily walk with the Lord, He'll
lead us in the way we should go.
"I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but
Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in
the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me." (Gal. 2:20)
"If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will
forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness." (I John
1:9)
"I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I
in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing."
(John 15:5)
-
PRAY!
We firmly believe that God unleashes his power at the request of
his children through prayer. Many of the above verses have dealt
with prayer. We have a prayer network of Christians who will be
praying for you while you are in Suriname ministering. A suggestion
we would have for you is to recruit your own prayer warriors. Give
them specific requests. Make sure they realize the importance of
their role in your ministry. When your trip to Suriname is over, let
your prayer warriors know exactly how God answered their prayers.
As an old Caribbean chorus puts it,
"Somebody prayed for me
They had me on their mind
They sacrificed their time to pray.
They had no doubt
That God would work things out
I'm so glad somebody prayed for me.
